Return of Micromax & Indian smartphone market

Micromax, the erstwhile smartphone giant is making a comeback with new smartphones. Micromax has pitted these smartphones against the phones manufactured by chinese smartphone giants, currently dominating the Indian smartphone market.

Micromax’s campaign does look like it will make the most of the sentiment against chinese brands but will their Indian smartphones be able to compete with current market leaders?

In this blog, K.K. Wagh discusses the different aspects of a smartphone that Indian smartphone manufacturers should get right, in order to stand a chance against their chinese counterparts.

Processors

A processor is at the heart of any smartphone. The faster the processor, the higher its price and the easier it is to operate complicated tasks. If the processor is slow even though the phone has everything else, it is going to be a let down. Also, using a very fast (and expensive) processor for an entry level phone would mean you are reducing the profit margin. The idea is to understand the segment of a smartphone - entry level, mid range, flagship or premium and use an appropriate processor.

Camera

One can never say enough about the smartphone camera, a component that more often than not decides which phone makes the cut and which one stays in the cart. The average consumer is not as interested in the camera features as he is in what the pictures look like at the end of the day. Instead of focusing on individual heroes like Megapixels, HDR or Image Stabilisation, the focus should also be on optimising the hardware using the right software in the phone.

Built

Most smartphones will last you 2-3 years depending on your usage. If the smartphone does not last this long, the reputation of the brand takes a hit. A lot of factors affect the durability - for instance the IP rating of a phone will tell you its ability to survive a splash, a rainy day or even a pool dive. Screen durability is another factor, often tested when users drop their phones. A lot of entry level phones in India offer a front and back protection with the use of Corning’s strengthened glass known as ‘Gorilla glass’.

Battery life

Every smartphone brand is in a constant battle to increase the battery life of their products. Some brands will go to the extent of launching separate phones with larger batteries. If you want to make a serious impression in the market, you have to include a fast charger with your phone. The average phone will last around 10 hours of medium usage and if Micromax wants to make a quick impression, they will have to match this mark or do even better.

Operating system (OS)

None of the features we mentioned above will truly make an impact if the OS is not up to the mark. A processor will determine the speed of a smartphone but a good or a bad OS can improve or ruin the smartphone experience. Most brands run their own OS on top of the original Android OS. The idea is to (i) avoid pre-installed bloatware - which are basically native apps developed by the smartphone maker and rarely used by the user and (ii) optimise/simplify the user experience rather than complicating it.
