Engineering Marvels – Part 2

In the age of modernization, engineering has been more useful than ever in creating impressive and jaw-dropping innovations. The following are some of the most impressive engineering projects undertaken by man over the last few decades, and those that were preceded by obstacles and issues of great magnitude. For now, let’s take a look at these engineering marvels around the world.

THE CHANNEL TUNNEL

The Channel Tunnel is an underground railway connecting France and England. This 50-kilometer-long tunnel has the most extended submerged portion of the tunnel at 37.8 km. The tunnel ferries both passengers and freight, the trains in this tunnel reach a speed of 300km/h. The idea of building this tunnel came when the proposal for building a very long suspension bridge between England and France seemed not feasible. Hence, this amazing structure of engineering came into existence and was opened in May 1994.

BURJ KHALIFA

Widely popular as the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa is truly the pride of all engineers around the world. It has 163 floors that account for a massive 829.8 metres of total height. This Y-shaped designed structure has a hexagonal core that is further reinforced by a series of wings. With the increase in height, the wings spiral back, thus changing the building’s shape and wind effect. The building broke numerous height records, including the highest outdoor observation deck, the highest occupied floor, and the tallest free-standing structure. This multipurpose structure houses an array of residential, commercial, industrial, and hospitality enterprises.

 THE NATIONAL STADIUM (BEIJING, CHINA)

Often referred to as the "Bird's nest," the Beijing National Stadium is one of the most unique engineering marvels of modern times. It is usually considered one of the most complex Olympic stadiums as its outer shell is steel, making it the largest steel structure ever constructed. The construction of this structure was supervised by a team of architects and engineers that were involved in making it world-class and future-ready. It is the world's largest enclosed space, with a capacity of 91,000 people. Due to its location in one of the hottest seismic zones in the world, the stadium is designed to resist earthquakes. Interestingly, the roof may seem random, but it follows all geometry and engineering rules aligned to the Chinese philosophy of harmony and balance.

PALM ISLANDS

The Palm Islands are the most recognized man-made islands in the world, and they are one of the boldest mega projects in Dubai. They derive this name because, when seen from above, they imitate the palm tree shape. It has three main islands, namely Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira. Among these, Palm Jumeirah is the only island open to visitors as the rest have residential properties. There are over 5000 waterfront apartments, health spas, villas, luxury hotels, and cinemas on these islands. This spectacular engineering marvel was completed in just over four years and attracted many tourists to Dubai's coastline.

K.K. Wagh is one of the top engineering institutes in India where future engineers will be part of such amazing engineering marvels.
